9th NLIU – Justice R.K. Tankha Memorial International Arbitration Moot, 2024

The NLIU-Justice R.K. Tankha Memorial International Arbitration Moot (the “Tankha Moot”) is the flagship moot of the National Law Institute University, Bhopal. Owing to the participation from various prominent national and international law universities, the moot gives a great amount of exposure to the participants to showcase their knowledge and adept mooting skills at a truly global level. Because of the stiff competition and abundance of knowledge that it offers to the participants, the moot also holds the distinction of being one of the biggest moots organized across the country.

The event has, in its long-standing journey, received enormous support from various individuals and institutions who have blessed the moot with their vast experience and knowledge in this field. The Singapore International Arbitration Centre, one of the world’s leading arbitral institutions has again extended its unvarying support as the official institutional partner for the moot. L&L Partners Law Offices, which is a leading law firm in India, continues to be our Indian Law Firm partner for this event giving us the unwavering encouragement to successfully conduct this moot. About Justice R.K. Tankha

Born on 29 May 1926, Justice Tankha completed his schooling at Allahabad and graduated in law from Allahabad University. Thereafter, he practised as a junior counsel to Shri Gopal Swarup Pathak, Senior Advocate, who later became the Vice President of India. Around 1950-51, Justice Tankha started his legal practice in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh where he received professional acclaim at a very young age. Subsequently, he moved to Jabalpur, the seat of the High Court of the State of Madhya Pradesh, and within a short period of time, gained prominence at the Madhya Pradesh Bar. 

He also served as the President of the High Court Bar Association. In 1972, he was elevated as a Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Justice Tankha passed away at the age of 52 on 13 December 1978. 

His son, Shri Vivek Tankha, joined the Bar in 1979 and is one of the most eminent senior advocates in India. He was the Advocate General of the State of Madhya Pradesh from 1999 to 2003. He also held the position of the Additional Solicitor General of India at the Supreme Court from 2009 to 2012. 

This Competition was founded by Shri Vivek Tankha in memory of his late father – Justice Tankha, to motivate young law students to strive for legal excellence and to promote the spirit of academic enquiry.

The Drafting and Reviewing Committee

The Case Record for this edition has been drafted by Dr. Ajar Rab, (Founding Partner, ANR Law LLP). He is an arbitrator with an experience of 12 years in the field of commercial litigation, international arbitration and corporate transactions. He has authored various scholarly books and articles. He is also a visiting faculty at NLSIU, Bangalore and a distinguished faculty at NUJS, Kolkata.

We are also grateful to Mr. Vivekananda Neelakantan (Deputy Registrar, Singapore International Arbitration Centre) for his time and efforts in reviewing the Case Record for this edition and providing his suggestions to make the Case Record contemporarily valuable for the participants.

Format of the Competition

The competition will have two rounds – first, a Memorial Qualification round and second, Oral Rounds. All the teams completing the provisional registration will receive a link for completing the final registration for the memorial qualification round of the competition. After the results of the memorial qualification round are declared, top 32 teams will be invited to participate in the oral rounds of the competition.

Submission of Claimant Memorial: 27th February, 2024

Submission of Respondent Memorial: 29th February, 2024

Release of Memorial Qualification Result: 12th March, 2024

Oral Rounds: 5th-7th April, 2024 

Provisional Registration

On behalf of NLIU, Bhopal, and our partners, we would like to invite your institution to participate in this enriching experience. The Registration Fee for the memorial qualification of the Moot is INR 2,500 per team which is to be paid after receiving the email containing the details for final registration. Subsequent to the qualification to the oral rounds, the team shall be required to pay an additional fee for accommodation and travel which will be intimated in the rulebook of the competition.
